Why Selma Blair Collects Cockroaches with Her 4-Year-Old Son

Selma Blair‘s son Arthur recently turned 4, and he’s starting to develop interests including swimming and soccer — but don’t expect to see her hanging out with the other soccer moms.

“His dad [Jason Bleick] takes him to soccer because I’m not going to be a soccer mom! I don’t know how well I’d fit in with that crowd,”

Blair told PEOPLE Friday at a Tiffany & Co. sponsored party in Los Angeles, celebrating the release of Liz Goldwyn’s new book, Sporting Guide.

“So dad can be a soccer dad,” she says. “I’ll swing by every now and then.”

What Blair does get to do with Arthur, even though it gives her the heebie jeebies, is look for bugs — something he’s obsessed with these days.

“Cockroaches are my biggest fear in the world. That is my phobia. But that’s all he wants,” she shares. “I’ve caught him caterpillars and watched them turn into butterflies. But no, all he wants is cockroaches.”

“He’s outgoing and charming and he loves to collect bugs,” Blair adds. “His new thing is he wants cockroaches more than anything. I’m like, ‘We can move to New York and that can be arranged.’ ”

Instead, mother and son look for cockroaches a little closer to home.

“We go on scouting trips for cockroaches to find them,” Blair explains, adding with a laugh, “We have to go to more urban streets because we’re not finding any in my house, thank God.”

Creepy and crawling or no, “Motherhood is the best thing in the world,” she says.

“I’m in love with my child. I find it so hard to breath when I’m not around him. He calls me his ‘golden girl.’ That makes me feel really good.”
